AFL Sports Nutrition Guidelines
ENERGY SYSTEMS
As AFL incorporates a vast number of
different skills, running, weight training and cross training throughout the
duration of the competition and whilst in training it is clear that all energy
systems are utilised. The following are examples of when each energy system may
be applied during the game:
ATP-CP system-
Fuel-
Creatine Phosphate (CP)
Dominant-
Up to 15 seconds
Used in all exercise initially such as explosive
short bursts of exercise. During AFL this system will be utilised during short,
fast sprints when making a lead for the ball, chasing down an opponent, leaping
for a mark or in the ruck. This system will also be used during pre season
weight training and sprint swimming. Although this system is only used for
short periods of time, a well-trained energy system displayed in an elite AFL
player will provide ATP at a faster rate and extend muscular work.

Anaerobic system-
Fuel-
Carbohydrates
Dominant-
Activities up to 75 seconds
The second most powerful system, the higher
the intensity of the activity the greater the use.
It is used in high-intensity exercise,
especially lasting 30 seconds to 2 minutes. This system is limited as it uses no
oxygen therefore builds up metabolic by-products such as lactic acid causing a
player to become fatigued. This system is dominantly used during longer sprints
such as a midfielder who would chase their player from one end of the field to
the other. The anaerobic energy system will also contribute to pre season cross
training such as water polo and stationary cycling.

Aerobic system-
Fuel-
Carbohydrates, fats.
Dominant-
2 minutes to hours.
Due to the fuel broken down and the use of
oxygen, the aerobic system aids in replenishing fuels stores such as ATP and metabolising
by products such as lactic acid. As most elite AFL players have a well trained
aerobic system there is an increased number of explosive efforts due to a rapid
recovery of the other energy systems. The aerobic system is used in training
and competition such as a 2km time trial or when there is a greater need for
the contribution of the system when a player becomes fatigued and high intensity
efforts decrease. This system would also be used during pre season cross
training such as water running and long distance swimming also during long
aerobic running training.
